Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS)
ETHERNET MULTIPOINT COMMUNICATIONS
Virtual Private LAN Service, or VPLS, is the next step in the use of MPLS: it allows every local area network (LAN) connected as a node in a specific network design to be part of a single Ethernet LAN. Where a Wide Area Network (WAN) is an interconnected series of LANs, a VPLS uses multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) to show each device at each subscriber location as part of the same LAN. By presenting an Ethernet LAN interface to customers, VPLS eliminates the LAN/WAN boundary; for end-users, whether in the tens, hundreds or thousands, all network services in a VPLS appear to be on the same LAN, regardless of location. And for I.T. staff, adding a new location is as easy as adding a new printer, laptop or server.
VPLS offers flexibility of network architecture, too. A single Ethernet domain is built across multiple LANs by forging point-to-point virtual circuits across MPLS Label Switched Path tunnels (LSP), using ‘smart’ edge-of-network routers. Connecting these routers by point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, or full mesh MPLS tunnels enables true any-to-any connectivity. VPLS overcomes the limitations of ATM, frame relay and IP VPN for WAN transport while carrying multiple services within each LSP tunnel. Unlike ATM and frame relay, a VPLS is cost-effective and easily scalable; and unlike an IP VPN, it can transport non-IP traffic.
Any enterprise with tens, hundreds or thousands of locations needs a simple, secure and cost-effective networking solution that will give retail, home office or regional office locations with little or no I.T. staff access to data and applications managed at headquarters. No matter how many or few points on the Ethernet LAN, all bandwidth, applications, access to the public Internet and data can be controlled centrally. Courtesy of the Classes of Service MPLS offers, a VPLS network permits prioritization of traffic across the LAN for real time (and less real-time) applications like Voice over IP; Video and audio conferencing; CRM and other business applications; Internet and intranet access; and E-mail. VPLS is also ‘geography-indifferent’, incorporating locations across country and across borders, and the technology is both scalable and movable.
